How Groupon Works

What is Groupon?

Each day, Groupon features an unbeatable deal on the best stuff to do, see, eat, and buy in your city. By promising businesses a minimum number of customers, we get discounts you won't find anywhere else. We call it "collective buying power!"

Do I have to sign up a group of people I know to get the deal?

Nope - our millions of members make up a big enough group. You'll probably want to invite people anyway, though — Groupons are fun to use with friends, grandparents, and men who wear monocles.

Groupon Saves Shoppers Big Bucks

Everybody is on the lookout for a good deal, but now instead of clipping coupons like your mom, discounts come via email for members of the latest free to join web sensation called Groupon. The concept is simple, a business offers a product or service, say lunch, at an extreme discount and as long as enough people sign up for it, usually at least a 100, the group is on and the discount coupon is emailed to you. Groupon has helped boost sales for many Businesses and helped many consumers save money on shopping and dining out.

The wonder man behind Groupon is 29 year old former music major Andrew Mason. Mason says the success behind Groupon is that it creates a win for both merchants and customers. Within a year Groupon has built a mailing list of 1.5 million names, sold more than 800 thousand Groupons, and has saved $35 million in 36 US cities. And it's not only food and shopping, Groupon can save you money on everything from museum memberships to skydiving. The company continues to grow at a rapid rate and recently turned down a $6 billion buyout from Google. Groupon recently raised $950 Million from investors.
